Why contractors need a different kind of SEO

A contractor doesn't get walk-in traffic. Your customers find you one of three ways: the Google Map pack when they search “roofer near me” or “emergency plumber [town],” the organic results below it, or a paid lead platform like Angi or Thumbtack that sells the same lead to three of your competitors. Contractor SEO is about owning the first two so you stop paying for the third.

That changes what the work looks like. There is no single storefront address to rank — you rank for a service area, which means your Google Business Profile, service-area pages, and citations all have to agree on which towns you cover. Reviews matter more than in almost any other industry, and they have to keep coming, because the Map pack rewards recent review velocity. And demand is seasonal and event-driven: roofing spikes after a wind storm, HVAC splits between the first heat wave and the first hard freeze, and your site needs to already be ranking before that happens, not after.

A warning on “guaranteed rankings.” If a company promises your contracting business page-one in 30 days, they are selling black-hat link schemes or spam that get contractor sites penalized or deindexed. We have been doing this since 2005 with white-hat methods only — the kind of work that still ranks in three years.

Trades We Work With

Contractor SEO by trade

Every trade has its own search behavior, seasonality, and competitors. These are the ones we know.

Roofing & Siding

Storm-driven demand, high job value, aggressive competition. We target “roof repair [town],” storm/emergency terms, and financing-related queries, and keep your Map pack listing review-fresh year round.

Masonry & Concrete

Chimney repair, brick and stone, walkways, foundations, retaining walls. Photo-heavy work — we build galleries that rank in Google Images and feed your Business Profile.

Demolition & Junk Removal

Interior demo, full teardowns, dumpster and haul-away. Our longest-running trade niche — demolition and recycling clients since 2010.

Tree Service & Landscaping

Tree removal, stump grinding, land clearing, hardscaping, seasonal cleanups. “Landscaping SEO Boston” and “tree service [town]” are winnable with the right local pages.

Plumbing

Emergency and scheduled. We split the site so “emergency plumber [town]” and “water heater installation [town]” each have a page that can rank.

HVAC

Heating and cooling, installs and service contracts. Two demand peaks a year — your rankings need to be in place before the first heat wave and the first freeze.

Painting

Interior and exterior, residential and commercial. Before/after galleries plus neighborhood-level pages for the towns you actually service.

Remodeling & General Contracting

Kitchens, baths, additions, whole-home. Longer sales cycle — we pair SEO with a portfolio and review strategy that builds trust before the first call.

Auto Body & Specialty Trades

Auto body, scaffolding, excavation, paving, fencing, decks, chimney. If homeowners or GCs search for it locally, it can be optimized.

What’s in a contractor SEO plan

Every plan is scoped to your trade, your service-area towns, and how competitive they are. The core work is the same:

  • Google Business Profile optimization — categories, service list, service-area towns, photos, posts, and a Q&A and review workflow. For most contractors this is the single biggest lever.
  • Service & service-area pages — one page per money service, one per priority town, each written to rank instead of thin duplicate pages that get filtered.
  • Local citations & directories — consistent name, address, phone (NAP) across Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, BBB, and the trade directories that matter (Houzz, Angi profile cleanup, chamber listings).
  • Review strategy — a simple post-job process to keep reviews coming in, because the Map pack rewards recency, plus response templates.
  • On-page & schema — titles, headings, internal links, and LocalBusiness / Service / FAQ structured data on your key pages.
  • Technical & speed — mobile usability, Core Web Vitals, indexation, and fixing whatever is holding the site back.
  • Call tracking & monthly reporting — through Google Analytics and Search Console, so you can see calls and form fills, not just rankings.

Contractor local SEO plans start at $450/month — flat rate, month to month, no contract.

How the first 90 days go

  1. Audit & baseline. Current rankings, Business Profile health, top competitors in your towns, and the technical state of the site. You get a written findings list and a fixed quote.
  2. Profile & citations. Fix and optimize the Google Business Profile, clean up duplicate and wrong listings, and lock NAP consistency across the web.
  3. Pages & schema. Build or rewrite the service and service-area pages, add structured data, fix internal linking and site speed.
  4. Reviews & content. Stand up the review process and start publishing the pages and posts that support your priority terms.
  5. Report & iterate. Monthly report on calls, form fills, rankings and Map pack position — then we double down on what is moving.

Service Area

Contractor SEO by town

We are in Everett, three miles from downtown Boston, and work with contractors across the metro and the North and South Shores.

Chelsea, MA

Dense contractor and auto-trade market on our doorstep, and a bilingual one — a lot of the demolition, masonry and painting crews here run in Spanish. We already rank for “contractor SEO Chelsea.” Full detail on the Chelsea SEO page.

Everett & Revere, MA

Our home base. Route 1, Broadway and the Revere Beach Parkway corridor are full of trades, auto shops and recycling yards competing on local search. See SEO in Everett, MA.

Somerville & Cambridge, MA

Older housing stock means steady roofing, masonry, and remodeling demand — and design-literate homeowners who read reviews before they call. “Contractor SEO Somerville” already shows impressions with no page targeting it.

Malden, Medford & Winchester, MA

Residential North-of-Boston towns with a mix of triple-deckers and single-family homes — contractors here live and die by the Map pack and “near me” searches.

Lynn & the North Shore, MA

Lynn, Saugus, Peabody, Salem, Beverly and Danvers — the Route 1 North corridor is heavy on contractors, dealerships and home services. We have an existing recycling/demolition client in Peabody and cover the whole North Shore.

Quincy & the South Shore, MA

Quincy, Braintree, Weymouth and Milton have a strong contractor and trades vertical, and “contractor SEO Quincy” already draws searches. Good market for a dedicated local page.

FAQ

Contractor SEO — Common Questions

Contractor local SEO plans start at $450/month, flat rate, month to month, with no long-term contract. What you pay depends on your trade, how many towns you want to rank in, and how competitive they are — roofing in Cambridge is a harder fight than fencing in Saugus. One-time projects (an audit, a Google Business Profile rescue, a citation cleanup) are quoted as a fixed fee.

Contractors rank for a service area, not a storefront, so the Google Business Profile, service-area pages and citations all have to agree on which towns you cover. Review recency carries more weight than in most industries, demand is seasonal and event-driven (storms, heat waves, freezes), and a lot of the searches are “near me” or emergency intent. The plan is built around those realities rather than generic keyword targeting.

Roofing and siding, masonry and concrete, demolition and junk removal, tree service and landscaping, plumbing, HVAC, painting, remodeling and general contracting, plus specialty trades like auto body, scaffolding, excavation, paving, fencing and decks. Demolition, recycling, masonry and tree service are our longest-running niches — some of those clients go back to 2010.

Yes. We are based in Everett and work with contractors across Greater Boston, the North Shore (Lynn, Saugus, Peabody, Salem, Beverly, Danvers), the South Shore (Quincy, Braintree, Weymouth), MetroWest, and the rest of Massachusetts. Work is done in person locally or remotely by phone and screen share.

Yes — for most contractors the Business Profile is the highest-return part of the whole plan. We handle categories, the service list, service-area towns, photos, weekly posts, Q&A, and a review workflow, plus cleaning up duplicate or hijacked listings and fixing suspensions where possible.

Those platforms sell the same lead to several contractors and the price per lead keeps climbing. SEO builds a pipeline you own: the calls come straight to you, they are exclusive, and the cost per lead drops over time instead of rising. Most of our contractor clients use SEO to wean off paid lead platforms, not to replace advertising entirely on day one.

Google Business Profile improvements and emergency/near-me terms can move in a few weeks. Competitive “[trade] [town]” and city-wide terms usually take 3 to 6 months. Anyone promising page-one in days is using tactics that risk a Google penalty — we only use white-hat methods.

Yes — most of the trade clients above are people we built the website for and then optimized. We do WordPress sites with the service and service-area page structure SEO needs from day one. See web design in Boston, MA and WordPress development.
